When decorating your home there is one thing we must all do: think about the big picture.
We need to step back and look at your room as a whole, and how that room works with the other spaces in your house.
Thinking about the big picture and creating a big picture strategy when decorating your home is essential in creating your dream space.
Tell me if you can relate to this scenario:
After all the time you’ve put into decorating your new space. After all the money you’ve invested into this project.
You are finally done!!!
Cue the fireworks…
BUT
Your home doesn’t feel right. Something is off. It doesn’t feel complete.
You probably didn’t create a big picture strategy for your decorating project and your home or your space isn’t flowing and working together the way it should.
THINK ABOUT THE BIG PICTURE
Thinking about the big picture and creating a big picture strategy involves seeing how each room works in balance against the others.
In order to create a big picture strategy for your home you need to ask yourself the following questions:
- How does this space impact how my home works?
- What do I need to get out of this space?
- Am I thinking about the room as a whole?
- Am I contemplating all that I want to do?
I’ll dive deeper into each one of these questions, but you can see by just reading them that they can really make you look at the bigger picture.
This step will ensure that you create a home that flows and works well for your lifestyle.
Your home is made up of a series of rooms and spaces. Each room is made up of different elements and you have different needs for each space.
In order to create a home that works and feels well, we need to do some big picture thinking.
You need to think about all the pieces and how they come together.
HOW DOES THIS SPACE IMPACT HOW MY HOME WORKS?
Do you have two spaces that are basically doing the same thing? Does the space complement your home? Is the space being underutilized?
These are some questions to ask yourself.
Remember your home needs to work well as a whole, and each space needs to flow into the next one and have a specific use.
You and your family should be able to flow, live, and work throughout your home.
Use big picture thinking to:
- Make sure that there are no spaces that are breaking up the flow of your home.
- You create a variety of uses to the spaces in your home
- You add a series of elements to different spaces that work together as a whole.
WHAT DO I NEED TO GET OUT OF THIS SPACE?
Have you really analyzed what you need to get out from the space? Or are you working only from what you want the space to look like?
In my book form should follow function.
Take a minute and do a breakdown of what you need from your space vs what you want from your space.
You’ll be surprised that these things don’t necessarily match up.
Make sure your space works for your lifestyle. The only real way to make your space work for you is to make you sure you think about what you need from it and decorate around that.
This is a key question to ask yourself when pig picture thinking for decorating your home.
You can find my Needs vs. Wants worksheet in my Free Decorating Workbook.
AM I THINKING ABOUT THE ROOM AS A WHOLE?
Is the sofa the only thing I’m thinking about? Am I just thinking about the paint color for the walls?
These are common mistakes people make.
A room is the result of how a series of elements come together.
A room includes furniture, accessories, accents, color, texture, etc.
Make sure to think about the room as a whole when decorating it, don’t worry about only one element. Think about the different elements in the space and how they relate to one another.
Think about how they come together.
AM I CONTEMPLATING ALL THAT I WANT TO DO?
Are you really looking into all of the details you want to do, add, or renovate of your space?
We tend to think that our decorating projects are way smaller than they actually are. Make sure that you really think through and write down everything you want to do.
When you start to break down your project and write it all down you will see that in reality there are a lot more things that need to get done in order to get your dream space.
And that is fine. Having big to do list is fine.
What isn’t OK is going around thinking you don’t have a lot of things to do, because this brings on burn out because your expectations for your decorating project weren’t real.
You can download my Decorating Workbook and use it as a guide, it helps create a big picture strategy that you can then follow to create the dream space you deserve.
Our home is in reality just a series of interlocking gears that should all work together in order to flow and feel right.
