The Marble House is a two-story house in Toorak (suburb of Melbourne), Australia designed by Nixon Tulloch Fortey Architecture. The project was shortlisted for the 2016 Australian Interior Design Awards and when you see the pictures – photography by Shannon McGrath – you will understand why.
The exterior of the house has a very distinct play on volumes and color blocking through the use of materials that feel clean and substantial. The use of black elements makes it a perfect follow up to yesterday’s Back to Black post.
The black elements of the architecture make their way to the interiors of the house, but used in a way that anchors rooms and also makes other elements stand out.
Good design is all about achieving a good play on scale, balance, and color. The play of black and white gives the interior spaces a clean, modern and crisp look; the use of statement colors throughout the house add a playfulness to the space that gets you out of a traditional black and white pace, and the use of flowy curtains made out of soft fabric balance the crispness of the space making it feel a lot less harsh.
It’s all about balance.
